Effects of sowing depths on growth and rooting patterns of cowpea and mungbean in a deep sand with shallow water table Thai Agricultural

In some dry-season cropping areas of northeast Thailand, farmers can grow selected annual legumes without irrigation by deep seeding. This cropping system seems to depend on capillary water rising from a shallow water table and seems to be suitable for peanut and cowpea but not other legumes. Seedlings planted by deep seeding might produce more roots under the seed position and could facilitate plants to absorb more water in deep soil because their roots were closer to water table. The present experiment was set up to investigate the differences of growth and rooting patterns between cowpea and mungbean planted at different sowing depths in a sandy soil with a shallow water table. This research is part of the project for conservation and utilization of field crops genetic resources of the Thai Department of Agriculture and the budget is partly supported by the Global Crop Diversity Trust of FAO. The project was conducted in 2009-2010 and aimed to conserve, regenerated, characterize and evaluate genetic resources of wild Vigna species. Being viny and indeterminate type, a total of 94 accessions from 19 species were grown in pots at Chai Nat Field Crops Research Center. The data were collected following the descriptors of IBPGR for mungbean. Photos were taken during at each stage of growth for a database management. Most of crop modeling is mechanistic model whereas the objective of this study was to predict mungbean growth and yield by artificial neural network (ANN). The experiment was 2 varieties (SUT1 and KPS2) x 2 water levels (rainfed and irrigation) x 3 fertilizer levels (12-24-12 rate 0, 15 and 30kg./rai) factorial experiment in RCBD 4 blocks growing for 2 seasons (no rainfed in the 2nd season). Data was collected for 10 replications in each plot. Using 560 sets of data from fertilizer rate of 0 and 30 kg/rai trained the ANN model by back propagation algorithm. The input variables were variety, fertilizer, irrigations, seasonal, growing degree day, rainfall, solar radiation and day after planting. The rest of 280 sets of data (only 15 kg/rai of fertilizer)...
